The TAP Flight 425 disaster

A Boeing 727 overran the runway while landing at Madeira Airport; 131 of the 164 people aboard died.

The aircraft, arriving from Lisbon, overran the end of the short runway on a rainy night. It was the deadliest aviation accident in Portuguese history and decisively strengthened the case for expanding and improving the airport.
