The flood of 20 February 2010

Extreme rainfall caused flooding, landslides and destruction, hitting Funchal and Ribeira Brava particularly hard.

Exceptional rainfall caused watercourses to overflow, swept away vehicles and disrupted communications. The tragedy mobilised rescue operations and led to major reconstruction of affected areas and protective infrastructure.
