The flash flood of 29 October 1993

A severe storm struck the island, causing deaths, disappearances, injuries and hundreds of displaced residents.

Watercourses overflowed and central Funchal was covered in mud, rocks and timber. Official records count four deaths, four missing people, 27 injured, 306 displaced and 76 homes affected, alongside extensive damage elsewhere in Madeira.
