Madeira Airport's major runway extension opens

Madeira Airport's runway was extended to 2,781 metres, with part of the structure built over the sea.

Supported on 180 columns, the structure allowed larger aircraft and improved safety and operating capacity. Its engineering complexity and impact on regional connectivity made it one of contemporary Madeira's defining public works.
