Funchal District Hospital opens

The present Dr Nélio Mendonça Hospital began operating, fulfilling a long-standing aspiration of Madeira's population.

Known for decades as Cruz de Carvalho Hospital, the new facility consolidated and modernised hospital care in Madeira. Its opening was one of the Region's major public-health milestones in the second half of the twentieth century.
