The August 2016 wildfires

Fire spread from the hills into Funchal, causing three deaths, displacing hundreds and inflicting extensive damage.

High temperatures, low humidity and strong winds drove the fires between 8 and 13 August. Around 300 buildings were affected in Funchal and regional losses were estimated at €157 million, making it one of modern Madeira's largest urban emergencies.
