Regular flying-boat service begins

Aquila Airways began regular services between Southampton and Funchal, via Lisbon.

Before Madeira had a runway, flying boats landed in Funchal bay. Aquila Airways' regular service connected the archipelago more closely to European air travel and carried thousands of passengers until 1958.
