Madeira holds its first regional election

Madeirans elected the members of their autonomous parliament for the first time.

The 1976 Constitution recognised political autonomy for the archipelagos. The 27 June election led to the first Regional Assembly sitting on 19 July and the start of self-government, structurally changing Madeira's political life.
