The Monte tree disaster

A large oak fell onto the crowd during the Our Lady of Monte festival, causing 13 deaths.

The tree fell in Largo da Fonte while a large crowd awaited the procession for Madeira's patron saint. The tragedy injured dozens, deeply marked the Region and led to a judicial investigation and renewed scrutiny of trees in public spaces.
