Madeira's first dengue outbreak is identified

The first locally acquired dengue cases in Madeira were reported, triggering a major public-health response.

The outbreak was the first documented on the island and the first sustained dengue transmission in the European Union since the 1920s. More than two thousand cases were recorded, with no deaths, and the response strengthened surveillance and control of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.
